Magical Porcelain Sculptures by Jennifer Hickey
Zillions of tiny porcelain petals sewn together onto tulle make up the otherworldly sculptures of Jennifer Hickey. At first look I thought they were paper, and they look like almost anything else besides clay: feathers, shells, fabric, plastic, even.
Hickey hand-forms each impossibly thin little clay piece and fires them by the hundreds. I can’t imagine how long each piece takes to create, but the finished products are all about how meditative and calming the process must be.

Porcelain is an amazing clay to work with as it is a bit harder to manipulate than some clays, but is strong when fired and filters the light beautifully when extremely thin.
I feel like people who work in this style are drawn to the visceral, the mysterious, the emotion in their art-making, and I nabbed a line from her ‘About’ page that illustrates this idea perfectly: To sense but not to recognise is a common thread throughout .
