There are 2 interesting things about Maura Segal. The first thing I noticed about her paintings was the big, gestural lines – so fluid and perfect.
I’ve been making a lot of similar drawings lately with ink to loosen myself up and relax into making subconscious lines, so I envisioned her stretching her arm up and around the canvas, reaching and painting
But! Then when I watched some of her process videos I realized that her line work is the opposite of quick and random. Those lines are actually carefully cut and placed thin pieces of paper.
I love art surprises.
Looky here. And listen. The music is lovely.
The second interesting thing is that I noticed she graduated from art school the year before I did, but didn’t start exhibiting her work until 2015.
BIG ART GAP ALERT.
I wondered if she stopped making art when she had kids, as I did. As lots of women do. I find this topic fascinating, so I think a post on this will be coming shortly.
Anyway, enough sleuthing. Enjoy her paintings.
