Do you like typography, collage, contemporary art, bold, contrasty colors and neat, geometric compositions?
Yeah, me too.
Cecil Touchon is an American artist who works in collage and painting, with the collage pieces acting as studies for the much larger paintings.
He explores his compositions in collage and sometimes these pieces inspire larger versions, made with paint, but still using paper to keep the feeling of collage going.
What particularly draws me to his work is that I can feel my brain try to mentally rearrange the collage pieces into their original form. Like a puzzle.
I desperately want to grab the pieces and slide them around until I have put them together in the way that makes logical sense to my poor brain.
Of course, that’s what is so alluring about these paintings – they give you so much to work out mentally while you are appreciating the compositions. I mean check out the use of negative space!
I’m finding that the more I look at his pieces, the more I love them and can appreciate them on much more than simply an aesthetic level.
Don’t miss the many books he’s created and has for sale on his site – including catalogs of his work, poetry, and Asemic writing, something I’ve been fascinated by for a while but never knew it actually had a name!
